Abandoned Pier: Catherine Bay Hill
PHOTO SET 08
There are very few piers in Sydney that resemble the traditional "Californian" style you often see in photos. This is probably the only one in Sydney; and what makes it better is that it's abandoned. The pier itself is locked off with heavy spikes and barbed wire but like all restricted locations - it hasn't stopped the vandals from graffitiing the place up. It all adds to it's ominous and mysterious vibe.
Catherine Hill Bay is located about 1.5-2 hours north from the centre of Sydney. Upon arriving at the ca park of the beach (to the left of the pier) you can walk along the beach and you'll reach the pier. At the bottom of the pier are these high cliffs made with pretty distinctive coloured rocks. Looks like this place would be a pretty cool place to kick back and have a few beers!
I think what draws so many photographers to piers is the combination of the long straight vertical lines of the piers which meet the crashing waves and the horizon line. Definitely one of my favourite places to shoot1
Catherine Hill Bay was the first stop of two for this road trip. The second location Caves Beach is about 10 minutes north of the pier. In the middle of editing that photoset so check back here in a few days.
